Good results and how you can achieve them?

The College helps you make the right choice of subjects

there is no need for you to choose your subjects before you start the course. During the first Term the college introduces you to different subjects and help you move towards the specialisation of your choice.

A broader Course programme

This includes subsidiary subjects, Academic English Language, Study skills and Information Technology to help you acquire the learning habits and cultural background that you will need to compete with British students at universities.

A Busy Course programme

Typically, you will have 20-25 hours per week of coursework; 16 hours of tutorials plus lectures, progress tests, counselling sessions, and English Language classes plus private study assignments. The College encourages all of its students to join the Duke of Edinburugh Award programme to balance your academic work and broaden your skills.

Help at hand all the time

All students are taught in small groups so there is close teacher-student contact. The teachers, all specialists in their subjects, are always willing to make time for you to ask questions and go into more details. The Director of Studies is in daily contact with students and is always happy to talk to you about your work. Progress tests are held every week while regular mock examinations and assessments are conducted regularly.

A Friendly environment for you to live and work in

King's St Joseph's is a small college of about 150 students and 30 staff where friendliness is the keynote. There are usually students from over 30 different countries working in an exciting cosmopolitan atmosphere. It is easy to make friends and there is a lively social programme and plenty of opportunities for sports and travel around Britain and abroad.

The adminstration pays a very close attention to students' welfare and fulltime Welfare staff are there to help you with many problems you may have. Accommodation is arranged with host families who live close to the school and who become your " Home from Home ". The host families are in close contact with the Welfare officers who visit them regualrly.

Studying at the College

You will study in tutorial groups of up to eight(8) students and in lecture groups of about sixteen(16). You will take 24 of 40 minutes tutorial periods per week in your main subjects and up to six lessons in English for Academic purposes. You will be given work to prepare for each tutorial and you will be expected to take an active part in the lessons.

You will be encouraged to take subsidiary lecture courses (electives; European Thought, Science and technology in Society, Post-war Social History ...) to broaden your general knowledge.

Information Technology and Computer techniques are taught across the whole curriculum and you will be encouraged to submit word processed work and to use CD Roms and the Internet as well as books in your research.

Applying to British Universities

University applications in Britain are handled centrally by the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service(UCAS). You apply to up to six universities at the beginning of your final year and you recieve offers from these before you take your A-Level exams in June. You get your exam results in August.

The College will guide you step - by - step through the application process and helps you make the best choice of universities and courses and with any problem that arise.

Choosing your Subjects

The subjects you study for A-Level depend partly on your choice od subjects at university. Foe example, to study Medicine you must take A-Level Chemistry; to study Engineering you must study Mathematics and Physics. For most students the choice is much more flexible and for this reason the College groups subjects into three broad subject areas:

Subject Area 1: Mathematics and Physical Sciences

For entry to degree courses in Architecture, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Electronics, Engineering, Geology, Mathematics, Physics.....

Subject Area 2: Science and Life Science

For entry to degree courses in Biology, Chemistry, dentistry, Medicine, Physiotheraphy, Psychology, Veterinary science, Zoology.....

Subject Area 3: Social Sciences and Humanities

For entry to degree courses in Accounting, Business Studies, Economics, Geography, Law, Management Studies, Media Studies, Politics, Publishing.....

When you apply for your A-Level course it is worth your while to mention which of these subjec areas you prefer. Later, after you join the course, you can try different combinations of subjects until you find the one which is best for you.
